Tooling University Re-Tools its Recruitment Methods

By Rebecca Steinberg Herson, Vice President, Redmatch

Tooling University needed to double the number of its employees. By the time Tooling U’s HR manager reviewed the hundreds of resumes received for each position, the hottest ones were already a week old. In a competitive industry looking for top talent, Tooling U’s Vice President Tom Barrett turned to Redmatch Recruiter™ to make the recruitment process more efficient, slicing days and weeks off the time it takes to bring in new hires.

About Tooling University

Originally part of manufacturing firm Jergens, Inc., Cleveland-based Tooling U provides web-based training to over 10,000 manufacturing workers in Fortune 500 and other firms. Research has shown that by the year 2010, 10 million factory workers will retire, and Tooling U is poised to help their customers – which include Caterpillar, Stryker, Kennametal, and other leading manufacturers – meet the challenge of having a skilled workforce through its e-learning solutions.

The Problem: Growing Workforce, Resume Flood

Tooling U needed to ramp up its sales force quickly. Vice President Tom Barrett was willing to advertise on leading job boards Monster.com or Hotjobs.com to gain maximum exposure for his job openings, but the flood of unqualified resumes he received for each position meant hours of work for his HR manager.

Even when the bare minimum of time was spent on each resume – just a few minutes per resume – the sorting and reviewing process would often take about 40 staff hours per position. The back-and-forth process between Tooling U’s HR Manager and Barrett was also time consuming.

“The time it took to pare down the pile to the five or ten top resumes was painstaking,” Barrett said. “It got to the point where a fantastic candidate might come in, but I wouldn’t see that resume until a week later, since it would get buried under all the rest.”

The Solution: Redmatch Recruiter™ Zooms in on Top Candidates

Redmatch Recruiter, with its unique reciprocal job matching engine, provided an immediate solution to Tooling U’s recruitment problem. Similar to a dating site, Redmatch matches job requirements with the skills entered by the job candidate, grading candidates as they apply. So, instead of facing a pile of unread resumes each morning, the HR Manager or recruiter sees a scored list of qualified candidates, marked as 50-100% match based on their profiles. At a glance they can tell which skills the candidate may be lacking, simply by glancing at the thumbs up/thumbs down icons in the candidate summaries.

“What used to take a week of work has been cut down to around 10 minutes,” Barrett said. “Now our HR Manager focuses her time on higher value activities, such as convincing those top candidates to join Tooling U, rather than pursuing another competing opportunity. She also is instrumental in the interview process, and in closing the deal with each person we hire.”

Tooling U’s traditional sourcing methods can still be used, and even expanded, with Redmatch Recruiter. The connection between regular job boards such as Monster.com and Hotjobs.com is seamless for the job applicant.

“In the past we would sometimes hesitate to advertise a position broadly since we knew we would be inundated with resumes,” said Barrett. “Now we don’t worry about being flooded with candidates, since we know Redmatch Recruiter zooms in on the qualified resumes quickly.”

Upcoming Developments

The Redmatch Recruiter system has enabled Tooling U to build up a bank of resumes for future positions. When candidates are not hired for the specific position to which they applied, their profile remains in Tooling U’s database, and are automatically matched to every job requisition, even before it is advertised externally.
